Genetically Modified Seeds and Foods.By Frank LambertCandidate for Member, Green Party County Council; County of Monterey | |

I sincerely believe that Monsanto Corporation and similar type companies are one of the biggest threats to the food supply on this planet as they increasingly tamper with Nature, with genetically-modified organisms, created in their laboratories in order to control seed and food production, and suing farmers who's fields have been contaminated with Monsanto's GMO-patented seeds. It's unconscionable, as many farmers, planters, environmentalists, and plain ordinary but informed citizens will tell you, to alter the genetic structure of a seed (specifically a food crop seed) to where after the crop is harvested, one section of the farmer's plot of land won't be harvested, but will let the crop "go to seed" to be gathered and saved for the next and future plantings. Monsanto et al want the growers to purchase new seed for each planting, thus increasing their sales. The nationwide grassroots campaign against the toxic fumigant, "methyl iodide", primarily used on strawberries, has been successful, and the Japanese company which manufactures that substance pulled it's product from the U.S. market because of public pressure against it. I'm part of the coalition in Monterey County (http://www.safestrawberries.org) that lobbied our County Supervisors to send a letter to Governor Jerry Brown to halt methyl iodide use in California, which they did. I've traveled and lived in about 8 countries, and have seen the benefits in the nutritional value of organically grown food. I'm a believer! |
