Teresa Duque on Higher Education

By Teresa Duque

Candidate for Board of Supervisors; San Francisco County; District 10

This information is provided by the candidate
Teresa Duque's platform on how to deal with higher education in San Francisco.
Teresa Duque is a person committed to developing higher education for all residents of San Francisco. Currently, education in San Francisco is entering into a crisis. While the city has some of the highest SAT achievement scores in the entire country, the achievement gap has grown between the highest and lowest academic performers. We need a leader in City Hall who will fight to provide real solutions for the problems of the people of the district.

Teresa Duque is a woman who has studied at higher education institutions in two countries. In Macau she studied at Sacred Heart Conception College, and at Far East College. In the United States she has studied at City College of San Francisco (CCSF) affirming her commitment to higher education. All of this was done while having to balance the needs and responsibilities of being a single mother with two children. Duque has actively participated with the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in San Francisco, Millbrae, and Daly City.

Teresa Duque is a candidate who is committed to reform. She is a candidate who is interested in working with community leaders to reform the city's institutions. With higher education, plans to:

  • We need to insure that our charter schools are fully-funded. One of the strengths of the SFUSD has been its ability to experiment with programs and test new ideas in an effort to insure that while San Franciscans continue to have a quality education.
  • We need to insure that adult education programs are made an option for people. Too often, many leaders forget the needs of blue collar and immigrant communities, which view 2-year learning institutions as an opportunity either for themselves or their children to escape a cycle of poverty.
  • Local government has to come the forefront in an effort to insure that after-school programs such as Midnight Basketball are kept running. Unless opportunities are presented to youth, many can easily fall victim to the trap of juvenile crime.
  • We need neighborhood schools that we can be proud of. In order to do that, we need school programs and staff are well funded. We need to insure that schools across the district receive the same attention to quality and funding. Education is one of the major building blocks to a great city. With your help, we hope to make sure that San Francisco becomes a world-class city for the 21st century.
