Board accountability

By Mark S. Simon

Candidate for Director; Town of Discovery Bay Community Services District

This information is provided by the candidate
the CSD Board can no longer act as a seperate entity, without accountability to the residents.
The CSD Board was voted into office with the expectation that they would act in the best interest of the residents. It is obvious, that (at least from my point of view) this is not happening. We are in the middle of a law suit, that our board could have settled at no cost to the residents but instead, has chosen to spend close to one hundred thousand dollars defending, with no end in site. Before our board made the decision to spend money we can't afford, they should have brought this law suit to the attention of the residents and given us the opportunity to voice our opinions, whether pro or con. I believe that all major decisions, especially those that will impact our lives, should be discussed with the residents before action is taken. I am a firm believer in town hall style meetings and constant communication between board members and residents.

We are still reeling from the outcome of the raw sewage spill in July. One hundred thousand gallons of raw untreated sewage was spilled into the lakes at the Lakeshore Developement. Our current board didn't even find it necessary to inform the residents until their feet were held to the fire and they were forced to get involved. We need a board that wants to be upfront and accountable, not one that only chooses to do so when they have to.

The Discovery Bay Press interviewed not only the candidates who are running for the CSD Board, but also Patty Night who has decided not to run for re-election this term. When they asked Mrs. Night why she chose not to run again, Patty replied (this is not an exact quote) I believe the issues and challenges facing Discovery Bay have changed over the past four years and I feel that a new board will be needed to deal with those issues and challenges. I agree with Patty Knight, it's time for a change and that change is desperately needed now.
