A fifth-generation Californian, I live in rural Cayucos with my wife, Grace Crittenden. We have two sons, Brian, 22, and Scott, 18. I was born in 1952 and grew up in the San Fernando Valley. My family moved to Santa Barbara when I was in high school. After attending Pomona College, I completed my master's degree in geophysics at the University of Hawaii. In 1976 I took a job in Houston doing research in exploration seismology. After 8 years there, I then helped establish a seismic exploration program at Rice University, where I also completed my doctorate in geophysics. In 1989, our family moved to Cambria. Since 1990, we have owned a ranch in rural Cayucos, where I have farmed the county's oldest commercial orange grove. Off the ranch, I have been active in a number of community organizations including,

President, 1999-2001 and 2002-2004. 2000 + 2003 Ag Preserve Review Committee, San Luis Obispo County advisory committee for Williamson Act contract applications. 2001-present Member, Board of Directors, Cayucos Land Conservancy, a private non-profit land trust. 2004 Co-chair, Hearst Ranch Conservation NOW, an independent advocacy group. 2004 Member, Cayucos Educational Support Committee, promoting the successful passage of a school bond for the Cayucos Elementary School District. 2005-present Environmental Awards Selection Committee, SLO County Community Foundation 2005-present Planning Commissioner, District 2, San Luis Obispo County |
