Healthcare

By Lorraine "Lori" Geittmann

Candidate for Member, Democratic Party County Central Committee; County of Los Angeles; Assembly District 53

This information is provided by the candidate
Heathcare should be a right for all Americans.
It has often been said that we are the only industrialized country in the western world without a national healthcare system. The time has come for the federal government to provide a single payer system covering all Americans. That system should be Medicare. It has worked well providing health care to seniors. It was originally conceived as the forerunner for a national system when it came into being in 1965.

Critics claim Medicare is too expensive. It would not be if it covered everyone. Medicare is expensive because it only covers seniors and the handicapped. Including the whole population would reduce the pool of those whose are most in need of medical care.

Private insurance companies could still play a role as they do now by providing Medigap policies.

Companies would benefit because right now they are paying too much money for healthcare costs of employees. In Japan, China, Korea and Europe companies do not pay for their employees healthcare costs. These are covered by their governments. That means American cars costs between $1000 and $3000 more than European or Japanese cars.

Medicare for all is an idea whose time has come. We do not need to wait another 40 years for it.
