The 2000-2005 Master Plan states "the newly developed schedule should maximize the use of available instruction space throughout the District." The college needs to make this a real priority in order to increase access to more class sections for the students within our district. A compressed Monday through Friday course schedule does this.
Efficient facility usage is a vital component to providing access to more students. A fully compressed schedule maximizes use of classroom space. Currently, MSJC has began to offer some Friday classes. However, in order to truly maximize facility use, the compressed schedule is most important as it uses every classroom every hour per day rather than in three hour blocks. Maximizing facility use increases the capacity to load rate on your buildings thus earning increased points to qualify for new future state funded buildings. The San Jacinto campus especially needs to increase its facility use. Until it does so, it will not qualify for any new state funded projects. District growth is such that even in the San Jacinto, Hemet, corridor, growth is everywhere. I will continue to speak on this need as your trustee as it is vital to providing increased access for our students. If we don't do this, the students will go to those other community colleges who offer them better scheduling and more class sections for transfer, etc., to allow them to complete their educational goals.
