1.Provide Police & Fire Departments the human & material resources necessary to respond to the needs of the public in a manner that ensures our safety. In a nut shell this will take money. Finding money will require creativity, along with citizen support. The emergency ad hoc committee of which I am a member investigated our situation especially that of the fire department and developed a five year plan that included possible sources of revenue Example for your consideration include an increase transit occupancy tax, a Bond Issue, a ¼ % sales tax increase, and property tax increase. I do not agree with some who would reduce the essential services of the Police Dept. In 1996 there was a staff of 25,with 19 sworn officers and 6 support staff to cover seven days a week 24 hours a day. Since then staffing has increased by 2.5, with 20 sworn officers 2 of whom are paid through grants. Due to the pay scale and the cost of housing here the turn over rate is high. Recruiting a new officer costs the City $80,000.00 in recruiting and training before that officer is on our streets!!! |
