How do you measure success in a school district?

By Barbara R. Kilponen

Candidate for Board Member; Fullerton Joint Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The efforts in all aspects of the high school experience brings about success in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District, and it can be measured!
  • Conducting a thorough survey every other year of staff, students, and parents using District goals and objectives as the basis for continued focus and improvement. Satisfaction within our district is at an all-time high.
  • Improving student attendance, a prime indicator of student academic achievement. Currently, the District is second in the county in attendance.
  • Posting civic and moral values in every classroom defines exemplary student behavior goals. Clean, safe campuses with extremely low discipline levels are evident.
  • Aligning curriculum to state standards and focusing on specific instructional strategies has resulted in increased test scores at all six comprehensive schools over the past six years. The District's increase in test scores was the greatest in the county this year.
  • Providing curriculum and resources so that all students may pass the high school exit exam and pursue college and/or career opportunities.
  • Initiating new student programs such as AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination - which is a four-year class of student and parent commitment to specific guidelines and goals for students who have not had family members enter college.
  • Implementing new management/teacher efforts such as Small Learning Communities to benefit student potential academically.
  • Creating successful partnerships with classfied and certificated organizations so that all attention is upon student potential and achievement, not union strife.
  • Providing Parent Institutes to help parents be more involved in their students' school activities as well as academic progress.
