What are effective strategies to help English Language Learners and/or low-income students?

By Barbara R. Kilponen

Candidate for Board Member; Fullerton Joint Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The Fullerton Joint Union High School District has been instrumental in providing high quality educational programs for all students, but there are additional strategies being employed for English language learners and/or low-come students.
  • Assessment at entrance and appropriate class placement is essential to provide high quality educational programs for all students. 40 - 50 teachers are trained yearly to assist English language learners as they progress toward graduation. Students are integrated into the general student population as much as possible to acquire and practice English language skills.
  • The four-year program AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination - is a student and parent commitment to specific guidelines and goals for students who have had no family members enter college. AVID is being expanded to more disadvantaged students in the four schools where it is located.
  • Partly through a federal grant, the District is providing added support services to homeless/needy students. In partnership with community agencies, students are provided access to good health care such as nutrition, and vision and dental exams. Additional outreach is a priority to assist families needing these resources.
  • Implementing new methods of teacher/student interaction to benefit student achievement. Small Learning Communities is a successful model which is being undertaken at four high schools to effectively meet the needs of all students.
  • Parent Institutes have been held at three high schools to help parents understand how their involvement in their students' lives makes the major difference in their students' success academically.
