ENTREPRENEUR

David P. Wong is a native of California, growing up in San Francisco. He displayed his entrepreneurial spirit by starting his own shoeshine business when he was eight years old.

After making a solo move to Los Angeles in his teens, he became involved in a number of enterprises, eventually settling into the construction field. He was twice awarded scholarships to universities, but elected to pursue his entrepreneurial spirit.

BUSINESSMAN

David gained experience in finance whileworking for a CPA firm and was Assistant Controller of a multimillion dollar company.

Seeking more control over his day-to-day activities, he purchased a restaurant and took on a successful restoration project in LA and became a remodeling contractor. He started his present company, Pacific West, in 1987 and moved it to Long Beach in 1989. He purchased and began restoring Wong's on Broadway in 1995, bringing him further into the Long Beach business community.

COMMUNITY ACTIVIST

David has a long history of community involvement starting as a teenager in San Francisco in community-based programs run by students from S.F. State University and U.C. Berkeley. In Los Angeles, he was involved on the Chinatown Youth Council, Chinatown Legal Center, the LAPD Asian Taskforce and the Council of Asian Pacific Organizations. He was Vice-President of the Board of Directors for the Oriental Service Center and was appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley to the Youth Advisory Commission for the City of LA.

He worked with the LA Parks and Recreation Department, the California Youth Authority, the LA County Community Services Department, and the LACUSD as a drug, alcohol, gang and suicide prevention counselor. He also was involved in the LA Human Relations Commission and the LAUSD Asian Education Commission.

POLITICAL ACTIVIST

David was very active in the political realm, participating significantly in the campaigns of Mayor Tom Bradley, Kenneth Hahn, Ed Edelman, Jerry Brown, Gilbert Lindsay and John Ferraro. The election of Tom Bradley over an incumbent Mayor is a particular inspiration to him.

RENEWAL AND CHANGE

Working on rehabilitation projects throughout the City of Long Beach, David has seen both the great potential of the City and the problems of its residents. He has always aspired to help people through his business and through his community involvement. While his emphasis since coming to Long Beach has been his business ventures, he now feels it is time to take a more visible leadership role in improving the city that has been his home for so many years.

He wants to take the people of Long Beach as his new clients and represent THEIR interests as their advocate and Mayor inside City Hall.
