John de Beck is a graduate of San Diego City Schools. He attended Cabrillo, Loma Portal, Dana, and graduated from Point Loma High in 1947. He attended San Diego State University and earned a BA in Business, followed by an MA. He holds 3 California Life teaching and counseling credentials and a California School Administrative Credential. He taught for 36 years, and was elected from the classroom to the San Diego Board of Education in 1990. In his first term he was elected Board President--(The last one to be elected by a unanimous vote). John has written numerous teaching guides, two published by the San Diego City Schools, and he has served as a consultant in Special Education and Vocational Education to over 15 California School Districts. He is active in the California School Board Association, and has served on their legislative, vocational education, nominating, and school-to-work committees. He has been a delegate to their governing assembly for 12 years, and served as a Legislative Liason for CSBA to a number of California Legislators. Nationally, de Beck has been an active participant in the National School Board Association, where he has made group presentations on School Safety and Reform in two National Conventions. He also has been a delegate to the Council of Great City Schools for Urban School Board Members and Urban Superintendents. Attending the Council's conferences for 12 years, John has served on many of their sub-committees, particularly those involving student achievement and legislation. In his spare time, John has designed and built his home in Bay Park, and is in the process of designing and will be building a steel-framed home in the same neighborhood. He is a member of the Balboa Park Kiwanis, and the Board of Directors of Alpha, a social service agency for mid-city. He is married to Maxine and they have an extended family with 7 children, 7 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. |
