COMMENT: Federighi, Horn, Strauss, well-rounded

Of the four candidates running for the Lafayette City Council, three of them have the edge when it comes to experience. Incumbents Erling Horn and Jay Strauss, along with Planning Commissioner Carol Federighi, have a strong grasp of the issues facing the city.

Horn, who was elected to the council in 1995, is a longtime Lafayette advocate - from his days on the Parking and Planmng commissions on through his current affiliations with the County Transit and Solid Waste authorities and the committee studying a fourth bore for the Caldecott Tunnel. He also brings his engineering and contracting experience to the job.

Strauss, who was appointed to the council in 1997 and ran unopposed for a two-year seat in 1998, also has a long list of qualifications. In addition to serving on the Traffic and Planning commissions, Strauss is a former Chamber of Commerce president. And his community interests have led to his leadership of the Town Hall Theatre board since 1996.

Before joining the Planning Commission in 1993, Federighi served on the Parking board as well as president of the League of Women Voters of Califomia in 1987. Her work with Legal Assistance for Seniors and her time as a teacher contribute to her comprehension of issues facing residents.

Meanwhile, newcomer Thomas Del Beccaro brings a welcome energy to the race. Though a resident for 27 years, he represents the new face of Lafayette - families who moved here because of the schools and are now worried ahout traffic congestion and pedestrian safety. Though he is striving to push his campaign beyond the traffic debate, it's clear he doesn't have a handle on key issues such as downtown redevelopment and land use.

For a council which can make broad-based decisions, voters should opt for Federighi, Horn and Strauss on Nov. 2.

Dick Waldo, Council Member, Danville City Council

It has been my experience that elected officials in one community generally don't write letters of support for a candidate in another city. What do I know about the issues? In this instance in Lafayette. Well, really very little, except to say that I lived there for four years many years ago. What do I know about the candidates? Certainly, in the case of this year's Mayor, Erling Horn, I feel well equipped to speak in his favor.

Erling Horn and I have served together for three years or so on the Board of Directors of the Central Costa County Transit Authority (County Connertion) and on the Board of Directors of the Central Costa County Solid Waste Authority.

Erling Horn always does his homework and is always well prepared. He is a strong and capable team member. He is innovative and creative in finding solutions to problems. He pulls his weight-and then some. He is broadly knowledgeable in a wide variety of civic subjects. I find him to be very much his own man, but a pleasure to work with. He is highly directed and very energetic. Most importantly, he is always focused in representing his constituencies with knowledge, vigor, dedication and strong integrity. I am greatly honored to offer him my support. In Erling Horn you've got the very best man to do the very best job for Lafayette.
