Overcrowded Schools

By Daniel A. Cadena, Jr.

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Maria Joint Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The numbers are in. On average, we receive 100-200 students more each year, than the feeder schools can account for.
Overcrowding is a Catch-22. If we have more students than we can account for, we have to rush to hire new staff and make new classes, at the last minute. But, more unexpected students means more funding.

We need to work closer with city leaders, to help us make school population a part of the infrastructure. We need to have developers take up the slack, and help provide all local school districts, with new schools. I have been meeting with city council members to make this a priority. If the Planning Commission decides how many new developements will be allowed, then the schools should be part of the equation.

Student enrollment has dropped in San Luis Obispo, and schools have closed. Lucia Mar School District has opened their schools to our local students, because they do not have enough students filling their halls. We need adequate facilities and exemplary courses of study to keep our student population at a record high.

We can address overcrowding in the short term. But, the more affordable our housing becomes, the more families will move in to the area. Overcrowding should not be the norm, but the exception.
