My views on some challenges facing the HBUHSD both now and in the future.One major challenge facing all school districts in California is how to maintain a balanced budget and ensure that tax dollars are being used wisely. HBUHSD must continue to retain the quality teachers already in place and to recruit "the best of the best" as staff members retire and leave the district. The HBUHSD must ensure that the students and staff have the tools needed to be successful. The physical well-being of all staff is also important. Every effort must be made to ensure that the comprehensive medical benefit currently enjoyed by ALL full-time employees is maintained. As a board member, I would be a very strong advocate for this valuable benefit. This sets the HBUHSD apart from the districts in our area and gives the HBUHSD a strong recruitment tool when seeking to fill all positions , both certificated and classified. Technology is advancing as I write this article. HBUHSD must properly maintain the recently modernized schools and be ready for the next "big thing". The district must see that all students have equal access to technology . One idea is to look at ways to use Bring Your Own Device ( BYOD) effectively. HBUHSD must fully integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) on all of the campuses. The classrooms must keep pace with the real world. Many of tomorrow's jobs haven't even been developed and we need to ensure that the students know how to think critically, collaborate effectively and work well in teams. Additionally, as educational reforms are introduced, the district must maintain as much local control as possible. Quality data driven instruction must continually be reviewed by classroom teachers and adjusted and improved as necessary. Good research based staff development must be in place. Teachers must be given a voice in the staff development process. They work with students everyday and know what works and what doesn't. The district must allow teachers to have access to and be able to use a variety of educational strategies. A good educator has many tools in their instructional toolbox. Better ways to use social media to engage students and enhance learning must continue to be researched and implemented. Students need to understand the importance of digital citizenship and their digital footprint. Students and parents are often frustrated with the transition from the elementary school districts to the high school district. Better articulation needs to be in place. Again, teachers talking to teachers can improve this transition. To address all of these challenges, study sessions must be in place. Board members must be out in the community and on the high school campuses on a regular basis. Input from all stakeholders must be solicited. If enrollment begins to decline, serious discussions must take place. As a member of the Governing Board of Trustees, I would do my homework and listen to students, parents, teachers, staff and members of the community. I would be open-minded and remember to do what is "best " for the students. In the end, it is all about the kids. |
