Official Statement for Jim Reed

I have educational degrees and work experience in electrical engineering, law and taxation planning. As a political moderate who will vigorously defend gun rights, I believe I have a much better chance of accomplishing important goals and successfully representing our District than my more extreme opponents. My priorities are protecting Northern California water, restoring funding for public education, and simplifying the State tax system while eliminating certain user fees such as the rural fire protection fee and school bus user fees. These priorities cost money and I propose to fund these without raising State income or sales taxes. I believe it is essential to protect homeowners from debilitating property taxes under Proposition 13. However, Proposition 13 gives big commercial property owners, such as oil refineries, an undeserved tax break; this is a loophole that needs to be fixed. Also, Proposition 13 discourages the commercial development of property because improvements are taxed at cost rather than value added, which is usually much less. Fixing Proposition 13 will foster private sector investment in infrastructure, which will improve the economy and grow jobs. It will also supply the funding to protect our water, improve public education, and eliminate those user fees. |
