Los Angeles is the place where dreams come true. I am running for State Senate, District 26 representing Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Venice, Pacific Palisades, Marina del Rey, and the South Bay. I am ready to bring the California dream back to Sacramento with hard work, opportunity, and hope. I grew up with a family legacy of military service and helped my grandparents shuck corn and feed cattle on their farm. I attended one of the poorest California public schools as a teenager and worked in restaurants to help my Dad pay rent. As a newlywed, I faced the responsibility of a parent's death, and as a new mother, the heartbreak of a cancer diagnosis. But I also know the transformative power of faith, community, and opportunity because of the obstacles I have faced. I know the joy of raising a child and the peace of mind that comes with being cancer-free. As a more than 14-year resident of Santa Monica and West Los Angeles, I have served as a law professor, community development lawyer, and cancer patient advocate. I am concerned about the rise of cancer diagnoses, estimated to be the leading cause of death in America by 2016. But my concern motivates me. I have literally run through every town in this district as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team-in-Training. But I am concerned about more than just cancer. I am concerned about the loss of jobs from runaway production, the closing of local businesses, the decline in our public education system, and the rise of crime in our neighborhoods.
