Promoting Open Space saves everyone money

By Jay G. Fischer

Candidate for Township Supervisor; Township of East Brandywine

This information is provided by the candidate
Open space, the acquisition of easements on undeveloped land, reduces the population of the township, reduces traffic congestion and reduces the tax burden on existing residents.
Shortly after I became a Supervisor almost 14 years ago, East Brandywine Township conducted a survey of its residents. One of the predominate concerns was the preservation of the character and lifestyle they had enjoyed in East Brandywine Township. Shortly after, I had the pleasure of support the Open Space Referendum, which as approved by over 74% of the voters. As a result, the Board of Supervisors appointed a Committee of individuals to indentify properties that were candidates for open space consideration, contact the property owners and educate them about the Open Space Program, and then complete the process of acquiring open space easements from the property owners, assuring us that the property would never be developed. I served on the Open Space Committee for 12 years. Studies prove that new residential development does not pay the full cost to the community and increases the tax burden on existing residents. We have been successful in preserving over 1,000 acres of land in the township. My opponent, a member of several home builder associations which oppose preservation of land as open space, has indicated he opposes the open space program for the purpose of preserving land from future development. If re-elected, I would continue to preserve land undeveloped land as Open Space when the appropriate opportunity presented itself.
