Newcomer Update

Melissa C. Booth

34 year Resident of Owen J Roberts School District, Graduate of Moore College of Art with a BS in Fine & Professional Arts and a 40+ year professional in Advertising and Graphic Design, presently the sole proprietor of VisaGraf Enterprises. Married with four children, all successful graduates of Owen J. Roberts.

"We choose Owen J Roberts School District 34 years ago. Ours is a great district but I have deep concerns with the current board regarding inadequate transparency, lack of internal interaction, community involvement as well as the direction of our financial commitments. While the sitting board fulfills its general duties well, these concerns need to be addressed.

The constituency of the Owen J. Roberts School District has grown frustrated with their silenced voice.

1. I intend to promote community dialogue, insist on Board Transparency, review Financial commitments through Tax Based Issues, reinstate School Board Forums and work diligently to improve testing and rankings results.

2. This community provides great resources. I feel my professional career, business acumen and long term work with youth and volunteer organizations prepares me well to provide a fresh perspective and determined resolve to serve this community and spend these resources educating all our children.

3. I attended the 2013 PSBA Leadership Conference in October at my own expense to better prepare myself for these duties. Board Members are legally mandated to attend Professional advancement opportunities. Many of our incumbents have failed in this duty. The public should be afforded oversight on Board Policies & Fulfillments. As the only Newcomer candidate, I intend to work hard to educate, prepare and encourage our children while impacting our community positively. With the resources on hand, I believe we can successfully fulfill this, the greatest duty the public undertakes."
