This paper gives a short introduction to my qualifications as a candidate for the LCUSD Board
The 25 years of experience in the field of education, the consistent and deep involvement in La Canada, and the commitment I have exhibited to the schools are a few of the reasons why I seek a seat on the LCUSD school board. My experience is multi-faceted, but always focused on education and student learning.
As a parent, a professional in the field of education, and an active member of this community, I am interested in the future of every child, because the education they receive today is an investment in their forthcoming success and happiness, and ultimately, the success of our society, in general. I foresee the next few years at the District as a time of transition in the areas of content standards, school funding, community building, and the development of assessment/evaluation tools for all our constituent groups + students, teachers, and administrators. I am the candidate who will be consistent, strategic and informed in guiding the district through this transition period.
My commitment to the La Canada Unified School District began with the enrollment of my two daughters in Kindergarten, who are now at LCHS. I have been an active volunteer with the PTA and the schools, including Room Parent at the Elementary School, Red Ribbon Week Chair at the Middle School, PTA President at the Elementary school, and Cheer Squad parent at the High School, along with involvement in various committees and school events. I currently serve as the secretary to the School Site Council, and am an active member of various philanthropic and service organizations in our community, including the Thursday Club, Past President of the La Canada Junior Women's Club and the Kiwanis Club.
My greatest contribution to this community as a member of the Board will be my experience and my knowledge of the educational system. My experience is relevant to the needs of the school district. I have over 25 years of experience in education, having opened several schools in LA County, served as a teacher in the classroom at different levels, an administrator of a school and an advisory member of several committees at the local, state and federal level on issues ranging from curriculum to content standards. I am a Professor in the field of Education at Pasadena City College, where I have been for 16 years. I hold advanced degrees in development and student learning, with a primary focus on learning theory and educational philosophy. I have also participated as a member and President of various local non-profit Governing Boards.
Above all else I am a parent, who wants the best public education for our children and to guide a successful, productive and top performing school district as it achieves success for ALL its students. I bring a fair and calm perspective to decision making, I have a hard work ethic, a strong capacity to reason, and will always maintain a sense of integrity as a member of the LCUSD School Board, maintaining student learning as a top priority.
