Why am I running?

I am running because I care deeply about the college, and I believe wholeheartedly in the people who are Rio Hondo College. I believe that the college is not the buildings or the grounds but the people who make it a successful institution. The entire staff (faculty, classified, and administration) and the students are Rio Hondo's strength and give the college its unique character. Through the years, I have experienced the sense of family (familia) that has defined Rio Hondo. It is a special place!

I believe that elected officials are elected to serve, not to rule, and I want the opportunity to serve. I know that Rio Hondo is a really good college with dedicated employees and motivated students. I also know that there have been some bumps in the road over the last several years. We need to bring the focus back to the people. We need to rebuild our sense of community and commitment to each other, recognizing that we are engaged in a common enterprise. Whether an employee or a student, everyone should feel welcomed, safe, supported and valued at Rio Hondo.

I am a problem-solver. I know how to resolve conflict and how to build consensus. I understand that a key role of a trustee is to set the tone for the college. I want to work on setting a positive tone, one based on mutual respect and trust. I believe that Rio Hondo College should be a place where everyone gets a fair shake, everyone has an opportunity to grow to their potential, and everyone has access to better future.

I am running for the Board of Trustees because I have been urged to do so by my colleagues. I am running because I believe I have the experience, the knowledge, and the understanding of the college to move it forward through the challenges of implementing the Student Success Initiative and the opportunities of completing the accreditation process. I believe that I can make a difference for the good.

What do I bring to the table?

The most valuable asset I bring is my intimate knowledge of the college. I know its history. I have been there for 38 of the 50 years of the college's existence! I know the college policies and procedure and that they are meant to direct the programs and services offered at the college. (I even helped to write a few of them.) I know the issues and the concerns, past and present, which have both divided and united us. I understand the budget. Most importantly, I know the people. I understand our students and the communities they come from.

I have served on a corporate board and a foundation board so I understand the appropriate roles and leadership a board member should exhibit. As a result, I understand the appropriate roles and responsibilities of management as well. I also understand fiduciary responsibility. The taxpayers provide the District with funds for programs and services; we must use them wisely and prudently on their behalf.
