Why consider voting for George for the MCSD Board of Directors?By George A. WheelerCandidate for Director; McKinleyville Community Services District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Speaking with folks in our community, my first question is usually, "If you were on the board, what would you consider an agenda item?" The answers are as diverse as the people I have spoken with. The common question that comes back, "Why do you want to be on the McKinleyville Community Service District (MCSD) Board?" Glad you asked. It's time to take another look at alternative energy. Over the next ten years, MCSD will pay almost two million dollars to PG&E for electricity. With advances in technology and historically low finance rates, alternative energy gives us an opportunity to put a cap on MCSD's energy costs, create local jobs, keep our money here, and potentially lower water/sewer bills. Regarding the token attendance at board meetings, there is a simple reason for this and it is not public apathy or passive praise for the board. MCSD could bring citizens into the process with a welcoming attitude and a few rule changes. When the folks in the folding chairs are treated respectfully and feel our opinions are valued, we are more likely to participate. MCSD could implement an integrated pest management plan (IPM) that would prevent future mistakes in the application of herbicides and pesticides to District properties. This plan would clearly define staff responsibilities, under our board's review, making the process a matter of public record. Hopefully, this would include a thorough examination of all alternatives, prior to the application of toxics. Though MCSD is limited by statutory constraints, it does have the ability to influence broader community goals through collaboration with other agencies and by providing necessary water and sewer infrastructure, and parks and recreation. MCSD needs formal, positive working relationships with the County and private enterprises in our community. It's going to take all of us, working together, to bring McKinleyville's future into focus. The decisions are being made now. Through the MCSD, you and I have a voice in these decisions. Let's make the most of our chance to make a difference. We need Board members who are actively engaged here at home, working for our community. Let me work for your family and mine. Please consider electing George Wheeler to the Board and then come to a Board meeting. Let's talk! |
