Public Safety

By Andrew Sarega

Candidate for Council Member; City of La Mirada

This information is provided by the candidate
Public safety is one of the most important quality of life issues in any city. Given the current legislature passed by the state including AB 109, which released tens of thousands of criminals back onto our streets, there is no wonder crime is increasing. Violent crimes are on the rise across the board. Many of those released criminals have a history of violent crimes and many have been arrested again since released.

My goal is to work with the LA Sheriff Department to bring more patrol officers to our city. Past city policy has been to eliminate these patrol officer positions and replace them with motor officers that primarily enforce traffic violations. The reality is now more than ever we need patrol officers protecting our streets and responding to our calls for service. Patrol is the basis of all police functions and I look to solidify this essential patrol function within La Mirada.

Secondly, I would like to introduce a warning citation system currently in use in Newport Beach. It is a warning citation system in which officers are given discretion where to issue a punitive citation or a warning citation. Mistakes often happen and sometimes a ticket is not the best remedy for the situation. Good people deserve breaks once in a while too. This system would allow officers to build better relationships with members of the community while still allowing them to carrying out their enforcement function.
