This information is provided by the candidate |
I am proud of my record of service to San Mateo County and California. Here are some of my achievements. My dad raised me to believe that one person could make a difference and used every opportunity to lead by example and to point out others doing the same. It was natural, then, that I joined the Army, served in Vietnam, and become politically involved as I completed my degree and worked in the family business. In the early 1970s, I made the decision to commit my life to public service and began in health care emergency medical services, followed by work to provide health care to disadvantaged youngsters. It wasn't long before I moved into the elections office in Santa Barbara County and knew I'd found my niche. I spent the next several years in this area in Santa Barbara County and San Mateo County upon moving here in 1979. For the next several years I worked in the County Clerk-Recorder-Election offices. In 1986, I ran for San Mateo County's Chief Elections Officer-County Clerk-Recorder, adding, "Assessor," to my title and duties in 1992. I have dedicated myself to working with county staff and key stakeholders to deliver results, solve problems and bring an innovative approach to government during my tenure. I am proud of my service record and the contributions I have been fortunate enough to make for San Mateo County and California. Here are some examples of my achievements: -Delivered fast and accurate election results -Implemented and fought for election reforms that contributed to greater transparency, more piece of mind for voters and made election audits easier -Created web applications that provided valuable financial information for schools and cities -Conducted California's first Poll Worker Academy - an intensive educational seminar for precinct inspectors -Published web's first blog devoted to the voting machine wars plus election reform, verified voting and democracy -Past president of the California Elected Officials Association, a non-partisan association of elected department heads and other locally elected officials -Appointed by California Chief Justice to serve on two statewide trial court reform committees which revamped California's court system -Co-founding partner and continuing participant, Smart Voter which provides electronic sample ballots and enhanced voter education on the web -Committee Member, Election Resource and Review Commission, International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers -Appointed by California Chief Justice to serve on two statewide trial court reform initiatives -Creator, Wedding Cam, an award winning Internet based wedding broadcasting system that allows couples to broadcast their civil wedding ceremonies over the network so that family and friends from around the world could attend the ceremony in cyberspace -First California Recorder to implement electronic recording -Mentor, Frontiers in Leadership program that provided role models for young minority youth to become active in civic affairs with the idea of becoming civic leaders -Civic Net Conference Co-founder, this conference brought together technology professionals, citizens and government professionals interested in building community -Served as a member of the Board of Directors of the California County Clerks Association and Past President, Bay Area Assessors' Association and legislative committee member; past Chairman of the California Assessors' Association, Technology Committee; -Founded a LeaderAcademy at Stanford University as well as the California Trial Court Training Institute which received the prestigious Ralph Kleps Award for innovation -Published article, "Voter Services in Cyberspace," in Campaign and Elections magazine as well as other articles and editorials -Past president of the Redwood Shores Rotary and the Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club -Completed the Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim Race in 2005.
