Political Philosophy for Sharon Jenkins
Candidate for |

|
Sharon started her journey to the City Council in April 2011. It was then that she started to talk to community members as well as current and past elected officials who serve various agencies within San Marcos. While there are always areas that can be improved the overall consensus was the City of San Marcos is moving forward in a positive direction and has made some good decisions to help the city get through one of the worst economic periods of our lifetimes. In January 2012 Sharon announced she would run for the council seat that would be vacated in November 2012 due to term limits. Sharon has proudly served the community over the past 20 years. (Please go to the biography page to view the various organizations in which she has volunteered her time.) For the last 14 years Sharon has been an elected Governing Board Member of the San Marcos Unified School District. She has tirelessly worked to provide a better education as well as facilities for all students. During her tenure student enrollment has grown from 12,000 to almost 20,000 students, academic student achievement has soared, four new schools were built, an elementary school was rebuilt and San Marcos High School is in the process of being completely rebuilt. As an advocate for education and children, Sharon has lobbied local state elected legislative representatives, Assemblyman Martin Garrick and State Senator Mark Wyland, for better funding. In addition, she has organized meetings for both representatives to come to San Marcos to meet jointly with officials from Palomar College, California State University San Marcos, San Marcos Unified School District, and the City of San Marcos to discuss the effects of the state's fiscal crisis upon San Marcos. Just as Sharon has advocated for the children of our community, she will passionately strive to enhance public safety, improve our quality of life, continue to build new parks and trails and encourage the City's ongoing development as a thriving education community. Always an independent thinker, Sharon will work to keep the City's finances strong, enhance senior and community services, improve traffic, make informed decisions and devote the energy needed to ensure San Marcos becomes "the" place to live and work in North County. Sharon's leadership in numerous capacities along with her commitment to the San Marcos community and her 14 years experience as an elected official proves she is the right person to help steer the City of San Marcos as a Councilwoman over the next 4 years. |
