WHY IS JAN RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL?

I am running for reelection because I believe that government works best at the local level where it is most responsive to its citizens. One person can make a difference. In the eight years I was on council, I saw it happen over and over again.

Our City has been roiled by a Recall election that removed three city council members from office in June 2012. In the same election three new city council members were elected. Two of them aligned with a third sitting councilmember to form a new, ultra-conservative majority. It is my belief that this new majority is trying its level best to dismantle the city and push us over the cliff to bankruptcy. Since the new council members were seated in July 2012, their actions have been impetuous and ill considered. Countless times during public comments, the public has pleaded with the council to SLOW DOWN. Despite these importunities, the new, inexperienced council majority has repeatedly ignored recommendations of appointed task force members and paid consultants who have labored for months on specific issues.

It is my belief that at its most essential level, a city government must provide a safe, healthy living environment for its citizens. This includes many responsibilities that range from police and fire protection to providing a safe, dependable water supply. In addition, we must maintain our infrastructure and amenities sufficient to attract and retain commerce to our city.

During my 8-year tenure on the City Council, I was a vocal proponent of the continued rehabilitation of our Downtown area. The results of that advocacy are evidenced by the many restaurants and increased pedestrian traffic. Two major residential downtown developments were completed while I was on the council and they have given our downtown a renewed retail vitality. In addition, millions of dollars in property and sales taxes were generated by approving entitlements to nearly 2,400 housing units, and a major shopping center at Amerige Heights on the site of the Hughes plant.

Other important accomplishments of my council were:

• The premier sports facility on Bastanchury Road.
• A new fire station and apparatus to replace an aging Station 6 on the west side.
• Rehabbing several obsolete parks south of Chapman in the most park deficient areas of the city.
• Construction of the Museum Plaza, playground and fountain.
• Independence Park Master Plan.
• Basque yard Expansion.
• Highland grade separation.
• Expanded and rehabilitated the aging Police facility including a countywide, state of the art communication system.
• Hillcrest Park master-plan, reconstruction and rehabilitation projects.
• Muckenthaler Center rehabilitation.
• Union Pacific Trail expansion.
• Construction of the West Las Palmas Bridge.
• Truslow mini-park construction.
• Transportation Center expansion and construction of the North & South Platforms.
• Arboretum expansion fund raising seed grant funds of $500,000.
• McColl Dump cleanup.
• Harbor Banner poles to promote City events.
• Major Children's Room expansion at the library.
• Reconstruction of Hillcrest Park's 100-year-old reservoir.
• Construction of Reservoir #C in Coyote Hills.

As a city councilmember, my task is to balance competing demands for limited resources so that as many citizens as possible are served. I do my homework and will work very hard to represent all of the citizens of Fullerton. I believe that I have the experience, education and enthusiasm to best represent all of Fullerton's 137,000 residents in the next four years.
