Everyone has a fundamental right to feel safe in their community. District 2 residents should not feel that they have to forfeit their safety to enjoy the diversity and richness of Southwest Berkeley.I believe that everyone has the fundamental right to feel safe in their community. District 2 is home to numerous thriving communities where residents move because they are attracted to the diversity and richness of Southwest Berkeley, and they deserve protection. Dealing with the crime requires a multi-pronged approach, of which the police are an important part. I am working with the City Manager and the Police Chief to make sure vacant positions in the Police Department are filled expeditiously. I support Community Policing and, as police will often tell you, the most important part of Community Policing is the community. I continue to help organize cohesive neighborhood watch groups and to conduct intensive public education campaigns to make residents more aware of various steps they can take to promote crime prevention. We know from crime statistics that a vast majority of crime in our neighborhoods is caused by a very small minority. Along with Community Policing I support Targeted Policing, supported by accurate and real-time crime data to help identify these chronic offenders, that directs resources where they are most needed. Disaster preparedness is also an important part of the safety of our community. I worked to expand Community Emergency Response Training classes and pushed for more neighborhood emergency caches to be placed in Southwest Berkeley. District 2 residents also need to feel they are safe while driving, biking or walking in Southwest Berkeley. That's why I helped to bring forward the Pedestrian Master Plan and the West Berkeley Circulation plan to reduce traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety. |
