A SAFETY NET FOR YOUTHBy C. Jennet StebbinsCandidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 13 | |

IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT OUR YOUTHMore than a few people feel that solving the problem of youth crime in our community is in giving the responsibility to law enforcement. The responsibility of solving youth problems ought not be giving to police, because the solution results in expanded prison facilities which cost the taxpayers. Our children and youth are our problems, parents, and communities alike. We cannot expect to develop character, excellence, high expectations, and fortitude in our youth if we do not encourage these qualities in ourselves. We are losing our youth to drugs, ganes, violence, alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases, suicide, poverty and homelessness. Our educational institutions are not achieving their goals because parents have failed in their demand for excellence, and in their support of additional funding for classrooms. Our only hope in solving the problems of youth is to develop a community network of parents, organizations, educators, business leaders, churches and law enforcement. A consortium of members of law enforcement can educate youth about the consequences of antisocial behavior: educators and the schools can develop leadership qualities; parents can nurture, build self-esteem and respect in their children; business leaders can be centers of influence in the world of employment; and churches can lay the foundation for spiritual and moral values. Our public forums must address the best solutions for youth in a peril, and governmental policies must promote the health and mental wellbeing of our children. Education rather than incarceration ought to be the public growth area of the new decade. Additional funding must be provided to schools to promote male accountability and responsibility in minority youth for fatherhood in raising their children, as stated by President Barack Obama. In other words what we have here is a required opportunity to succeed. |
