Mary Salas is the right candidate for Chula Vista City Council to lead our city toward a prosperous future. She was born and raised in Chula Vista and has a long history of service to her community as a volunteer, then as a City Councilmember and State Assemblymember for our region. Mary's work to move Chula Vista forward is evident throughout the city. She led efforts to secure funding for new urban parks, formed working partnerships with various government agencies to ensure completion of Olympic Parkway and other major traffic thoroughfares and played a key role in the planning of the award-winning communities of Eastlake, Otay Ranch, and San Miguel. In addition, her commitment to expanding higher education opportunities led to her appointment as chair of the Chula Vista University Blue Ribbon Committee. Mary's past track record as a Chula Vista Councilmember demonstrates she will be an integral part of the team who will guide our city's future development. She knows Chula Vista has the potential to become a world-class city, and she has the experience to successfully steer major upcoming projects, including the Millenia at the Eastern Urban Center, a four-year university and research park, the urban renewal of western Chula Vista and the long- awaited revitalization of the bay front. Mary began her service to the community on the Chula Vista Civil Service Commission in 1991. She was next appointed to the Planning Commission in 1993 and served until she was elected to the Chula Vista City Council in 1996, beating her opponent by 10 percentage points. Mary easily won re-election in 2000 with 66 percent of the vote. After leaving the Council, she served as a Director of the Sweetwater Authority/South Bay Irrigation District. She was elected to the California State Assembly in 2006, where she chaired the Committee on Veteran's Affairs. She also served on the Jobs, Economic Development and Economy Committee, the Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee and the Health Committee. Mary graduated magna cum laude from San Diego State University, receiving a bachelor's degree in Social Work. She has two daughters, Michele and Sara, and is the proud grandmother of Michael, Adriana and Marissa. Mary's public service, diverse experience and proven leadership demonstrate her dedication to her community. She is well respected by her peers and has a reputation of being an honest broker who gets things done for our community. Additionally, she knows how to win elections, with her hundreds of volunteers, support from community leaders and exceptional fundraising capability. Mary Salas is the clear choice to represent the people of Chula Vista on the City Council in the upcoming 2012 election. |
