Education Principles: Our children need and deserve a comprehensive 21st century education that includes the arts, sciences, technology, physical education and vocational classes. "Back-to-basics," phonics, and basic math programs are not enough for all students to succeed; 21st century jobs will require life-long learning skills, creativity and an ability to work on a team. A strong and vibrant public education system gives every child a chance to succeed and assures the continued success and prosperity of our society. Learning Environment: Children need a safe and healthy learning environment in order to achieve to the best of their ability. It is vitally important that every school in every district is safe, well-equipped and up to code School District Budgets: Orange County Board of Education members must be fiscally prudent in reviewing and approving district and county budgets so that funds are focused on the classroom, with student achievement as the highest priority. Parent Involvement: Parent and community involvement is vitally important for the success of every child, especially for at-risk children and youth. To increase student achievement among at-risk children and youth, their parents/guardians should be given resources to enhance their parenting skills. In addition, they should be encouraged to partner with their child's teacher and school. Curriculum: Every child should have access to an education that leads to a skilled position in a high technology workplace. Not every student will take the path to college, but all should have the opportunity to explore technical programs that prepare them to make informed career decisions. Communication: Local school districts and communities need to be informed about the programs offered by the Orange County Department of Education; there should be an open line of communication between local school boards and the Orange County Board of Education. |
