Democratic leaders have a responsibility to register new voters and get out the vote for our candidates, but we must also be clear about what our values are. I believe in the party of the New Deal, Social Security, the War on Poverty, and the Great Society. Here is a list of my positions and values:
- Put unemployed Americans and Californians back to work with expanded stimulus, more public works, and a modern equivalent of the Works Progress Administration.
- Support and defend workers rights, including the Employee Free Choice Act, stronger labor law enforcement, and living-wage requirements.
- Support public employees. Put the blame for our economic woes on Wall Street, where it belongs.
- Continue to support the California Democratic Party's bold position of opposition to the wars in Iraq AND Afghanistan. Stop training, funding, and supporting anti-democratic interests in the Middle East, Latin America, and beyond.
- Defend the environment by continuing to oppose efforts to weaken AB 32, SB 375, CEQA, the Coastal Act, and other environmental legislation. Support aggressive policies to address climate change.
- Invest in the new green energy economy at every level of government. Continue to defend Community Choice Aggregation, municipal utilities, and other innovative local programs from the anti-competitive attacks of PG&E.
- Continue the fight for Single-Payer Universal Healthcare. California can do it with Mark Leno's legislation to create the California OneCare program.
- Fully fund public education from Kindergarten to College, support teachers unions, and repeal No Child Left Behind.
- Equal Rights for LGBTQ Americans and Californians, including Marriage Equality and employment non-discrimination.
- Defend and expand the rights of women, including equal pay and unimpeded access to contraception and abortion.
- Support comprehensive immigration reform that welcomes new Americans rather than slamming the door in their faces or making them jump through punitive hurdles to attain citizenship.
- Continue the fight against racism and xenophobia in the criminal justice system, public education, housing and beyond. Invest in non-white communities where government neglect and institutional racism have created economic hardships.
- Protect and respect tribal sovereignty rights. Support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
- No to Corporate Personhood! I support the Move to Amend campaign in its efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution to state that money is not speech and corporations are not people.
- Protect the rights of tenants. Repeal Costa-Hawkins and elect pro-tenant Democrats to the state legislature.
- Support democratic reforms such as Same Day Voter Registration, Instant Runoff Voting, and publicly funded elections.
