Position PaperBy Thomas L. "Tom" FreemanCandidate for Board Member; Stanislaus Union School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I have the leadership and experience that are needed in these troubled times to maintain quality educational programs and instruction in Stanislaus Union School District. In these disastrous economic times, schools in California are taking the brunt of many of the cuts necessary to balance the state's financial budget. For a while, many people were deluded by the rhetoric that cuts would be made far from the classroom, implying that students' education would not be negatively affected. This was simply an exercise in euphemisms. Any cuts to the educational budget not only affects the school district, it affects the quality of the instructional programs and support services for our students. While there is still no immediate relief in sight, there are ways to creatively manage our resources so teachers have the tools to teach and students have a quality program presented to them daily in the classroom. Based upon my extensive experience in education and my track record for being innovative while remaining fiscally responsible, I feel that I am uniquely qualified to help make important decisions as a member of the Stanislaus Union School Board. I have been an educational professional for the past 39 years as a teacher, site administrator at both elementary and junior high levels, and as a district office administrator. I have previously held the chairmanship of the school board in Crailsheim, Germany, as a teacher for the Department of Defense. I have served on a variety of committees both locally and at the state level. I have taught education classes for Chapman University and have presented workshops at variety of educational venues including a state-wide webcast on school improvement. I have served Stanislaus Union School District as a parent, active PTC member, and parent representative on both GATE and Bond Oversight committees. I also served the district as principal at Chrysler School and at Prescott Junior High School. In short, I know the District, and I know the full realm of education. California Schools are burdened by a variety of restrictions, regulations, and categorical funding issues. I hope to use my knowledge of these hurdles to maximize the use of our resources. I also want to see us prioritize our cuts, so when monies do become available, we are cognizant of the history of programs and personnel that were effective and which should be reinstated. I believe in the partnership of all stakeholders (parents, teachers, administrators). No group should carry the burden of all of the cuts and each should be valued for its contribution. All groups play a unique role in the education of our students and it is only when all sides have been heard from can we truly make the best decisions. I will foster the on-going communication needed to make informed decisions. Finally, I see my role as an advocate for children, all children, each unique and with needs that must be met. Regardless of how adults have created a mess with the economy, our students should be given their chance to succeed. We know education is a precursor to success. We must ensure that the best education is happening in every classroom, that evidence-based research practices are being implemented, and that students come home feeling validated on a daily basis. Positive direction by the board will guarantee our students a better chance for tomorrow. I feel that I can be an affirmative voice for the students of Stanislaus Union. |
