High Academic Expectations/Parental involvementBy Patsy SutleyCandidate for Governing Board Member; Mountain View School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
My highest priority is to push for high academic expectations. This is not simply a platitude to me. I truly believe that our children can be successful and we must expect that from them. We have begun that process through curriculum alignment. In curriculum alignment we can hold the students accountable through a series of standards being taught and then tested for understanding. This approach is showing great benefit for the students. Parents are such an integral part in the education of their children that we must see that they are kept informed of the academic performance of their child. There should be no surprises during report card time. This is something I believe strongly and will pursue. In addition to that we need to find ways to have meaningful school involvement for our parents. Using Joyce Epstein's model we have just began the journey to develop a partnership between parents, teachers, administrators, and school employees by site level to develop programs pertinent for that school. Studies have shown that family involvement helps improve student achievement which is our primary goal. My own three children went through this district and received a good education. Now I'm "paying forward" to give the students that are entrusted to us now that same benefit. |
