Historically having an elected City Clerk in the City of Maywood has proved ineffective as there has been no accountability in that office. The office of the City Clerk has the critical function and responsibility of recording the actions taken by the City Council. As noted through audits, this very important function has not been consistently performed as required. Under the current organizational structure the elected City Clerk answers to the public at large and there has been no accountability. The community members now have an opportunity to improve the accountability of that office and improve the future of Maywood by voting yes for an appointed City Clerk. A yes vote guarantees that minimum qualifications will be established ensuring that a qualified professional with required experience that clearly understands the critical responsibilities of the City Clerk is appointed to the office in order to best meet the needs of the community and the public at large. In addition, office hours will be required and a clear job description including expectations for performance by the appointed City Clerk will be established in order to improve the accountability of that office. Let's get the City back on track by voting yes for an appointed City Clerk. This statement is FALSE! When we the people are unhappy with our City Clerk, we have the right to vote them out! We the people hold the City Clerk accountable with our vote! We will LOSE this right if Measure "C" passes. VOTE "NO" on Measure "C". The proponents of Measure "C" argue that a "yes" vote, would guarantee that minimum qualifications will be established for an appointed City Clerk. This statement is FALSE! The only GARANTEES resulting from voting yes on Measure "C" are that the voters will be disenfranchised from their right to Vote a City Clerk in or out of Office and that 3 people in a city of 30,000 will decide who they appoint as City Clerk. VOTE "NO" on Measure "C". The argument made by proponents to Measure "C" implies that voting yes will increase the City Clerk's accountability. This is both True and False. Voting yes on Measure "C" abolishes the Clerk's accountability to YOU, the Voter, further it makes the City Clerk accountable and beholden to the majority of the Council!! Dear Maywood Voter, VOTE NO on Measure C. For over 85 years, it has been the right of the people to vote for whom the people believe will best represents the people's interest in the Office of City Clerk. Today you have the right to run for the office of City Clerk. Today you have the right to vote for whom you believe is the best candidate for City Clerk. Today you can hold your City Clerk accountable for their actions by virtue of your vote. If Measure C passes you will lose and FOREVER FOREFEIT THOSE RIGHTS! Measure C lends itself to FAVORTISM, CRONYSM AND CORRUPTION. Should 3 people in a city of 30 thousand be given such power? Shall we give away our constitutional right, our voice, our power of vote and let a select few appoint whomever they see fit? VOTE NO on Measure C. The City Clerk's Office is independent from the City Council and serves the public by providing legal notice and support of public hearings, preservation of and open access to public records, as well as conducting municipal elections. Clerical duties of the City Clerk include keeping accurate records of the legislative body with a comprehensive index and of maintaining an ordinance book and recording all certified city ordinances. VOTE NO on Measure C. Join in our struggle to maintain the people's right and power to elect government representatives! That does NOT hold true TODAY in Maywood. Vote YES on Measure C because we deserve ACCOUNTABILITY, PROFESSIONALISM, and TRANSPARENCY. The important duties of the City Clerk have been IGNORED and NEGLECTED for many years and it is time for us to say this is NOT ACCEPTABLE by voting YES on Measure C. Don't be misled by the opponents of this Measure who want you to believe this is about the right to vote. IT IS NOT! Measure C is about improving Maywood. A YES VOTE means that we will NO longer tolerate irresponsibility and incompetence in the position of City Clerk. Let's raise the standard we deserve better. We pay that salary! Let's hold that position accountable by voting YES on Measure C. Previous year audits have shown a problem in the City Clerk's office. Missing and incomplete minutes along with other official documents is NOT acceptable. If you and I did that in our jobs we would be fired! Let's apply that same accountability to the City Clerk position. Vote YES on Measure C. Don't be fooled by the false statements made by the two opponents of Measure C and T. They have a personal interest in the position---they are running for City Clerk and City Treasurer. Let's improve Maywood by voting YES on MEASURE C.
