It is a popular myth that Upper Moreland's children cannnot achieve at the same level as wealthier surrounding communities.I have had almost daily contact with the Upper Moreland Schools over 19 years and participated as a parent at every grade level. A common theme was that because Upper Moreland was a "blue collar" community, the students couldn't be expected to compete with their wealthier neighbors. As a retired Philadelphia Teacher after 28 years, I have come to appreciate two things. There are many good schools with a majority of poor families that achieve as well, or at a higher level than our local districts-- Girls High, Central, Masterman and others come to mind. Secondly, If you think you can't do something, you probably won't. We need to raise our expectations. High Expectations go hand in hand with high achievement! |
