Position StatementBy Dan CarpenterCandidate for Councilmember; City of San Luis Obispo | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Budget The City expects a significant budget shortfall for the next two-year budget. Declining revenues and rising expenditures require difficult decisions. I have a proven record of vision, leadership, business management and fiscal oversight to help make those decisions. Neighborhood Wellness Our family-friendly neighborhoods are at risk. Noise, trash, parking, and other violations are rising. The Council must address these to protect our neighborhoods. I will make this a priority. Measure H+The Prado Road Initiative Governance by the initiative process is counterproductive to our representative democracy form of government. I will not support any attempt at ballot box legislation. Alternative Transportation Public transportation must be promoted, protecting our quality of life by reducing congestion and improving air quality. Many people in our community depend on it for regular transportation. It must remain affordable to encourage use. We must also encourage walking and bicycle use with adequate bike paths and sidewalk accessibility. Open Space I will continue to support our protection and acquisition of our surrounding hills for open space. Accessibility It is my commitment to be accessible to the electorate. You'll notice my direct phone number on my yard signs and any printed material, and my e-mail address at the bottom of this position statement. Being accessible is a must. As your elected representative, I promise to remain available to your concerns. Laguna Lake Laguna Lake Park needs to be maintained, including a program of dredging the lake. This project will require substantial resources, and should be addressed during the budget and goal setting process. We need a definite plan in place instead of postponing action indefinitely. Public Safety Nothing is more critical to the quality of life in our community than Public Safety. As your elected official, it's my responsibility to make sure the health and safety of our citizens is protected and enhanced. Homeless Population The City of SLO participates in the countywide "10 year plan to end homelessness". I support a "one stop campus" for the homeless, so that all the services may be provided in one location proposed for the corner of Prado Road and South Higuera. I am actively volunteering for the Interfaith Coalition for the Homeless, CAPSLO, and Peoples Kitchen. I also encourage strict enforcement of city laws to combat aggressive panhandling that is pervasive in the Downtown core. Please contact me with any questions about my positions on the issues facing our city. |
