Candidate for
Board of Supervisors; San Francisco County; District 6

My name is Jim Meko. I have lived and worked in District 6 since 1977.

My campaign is about our neighborhoods, small businesses and quality of life. If you have any questions or concerns, call me at (415) 624-4309. Here is why I am asking that you make me your first choice on the November 2nd ballot.

I am a familiar face at City Hall ... not as a political crony or gadfly, but rather as a well-known and respected advocate for community-based planning. People know me as an organizer who listens to everyone. As your Supervisor, we will work together.

I have an intimate familiarity with the quality of life issues that affect all of us. I know what has worked and what has failed and I believe my institutional knowledge is the key to ensuring that we bring real change to District 6.

I'm also a fiscally responsible progressive. I fully support the need to reform our unsustainable public employee pension system in order to save our City's vital services.

I have learned a great deal during the seven years I've served on the Entertainment Commission, throughout my tenure as chair of the SoMa Leadership Council, and in the course of the six years (and literally hundreds of community meetings) that have gone into the Western SoMa Citizens Planning Task Force. I am not beholden to special interest groups, political machines, or powerful benefactors.

In the next four years, we're going to have to carefully manage the changes brought on by plans for Treasure Island, Mid-Market Redevelopment and the Central Subway project along Fourth Street. The Rincon Hill, South Beach, Mission Bay, and Yerba Buena neighborhoods all need greater attention to pedestrian safety, more neighborhood-serving businesses, and infrastructure and open space to meet the needs of new residents. The city has yet to deliver on the promised benefits of the Eastern Neighborhoods process and the Western SoMa Community Plan will be coming up for adoption next year. No one running for District 6 Supervisor has the kind of land use and planning expertise that I bring to the table.
