Candidate for
Council Member; City of Encinitas

Hi! My name is Tony Kranz. Encinitas is my home town. I have seen this area grow from a collection of little surf and agricultural towns to become a unique City combining our five distinct communities.

As your City Council Representative, I promise to do all in my power to keep that charming, small town atmosphere--that feeling we all love--alive and well. I'm asking for your support and your vote in this election year.

Why am I running for City Council?

I have enjoyed a life-long relationship with Encinitas. My wife and I have raised our children here and now I want to give back to this City that has given us so much. I have educated myself on the issues that you care about. I understand how City Governance functions. I will protect your wallets and your rights as I would my own.

Ten years in the Army National Guard taught me the meaning and value of service to my community and my country. My service, business background, and community participation have taught me to work effectively with people to meet challenges, solve problems and achieve workable solutions. I will work to preserve and enhance the finer aspects of our City for our children and ourselves. I will create for all citizens, a more responsive and respectful government.

Economic and environmental sustainability are the balancing partners that make up the quality of life we want to protect in Encinitas. As a businessman, I know how to get things done using sound business practices and understand the need for a robust business climate. Our City is admired and desirable because of careful stewardship by citizens of our beaches, lagoons, and open spaces which we must continue to enhance.

I have a great appreciation for art and artists. My own experience as an artist includes being a Jerome Fellow at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 1996, where I was awarded a grant to produce a handmade book using photographs and writing by me and my mother. I have a photography studio and printing press at my house.

About My Family

I moved here as a child with my mom and dad in 1960. My dad, Jerry Kranz was hired to teach PE and coach at Earl Warren Junior High School. My mom, Toni Kranz, was busy raising seven kids: Fred, Rose, Tony (me), Katie, Trudy, Peggy and Jim. Mom later worked for several years as a Nurse Practitioner. We had a fun and active childhood.

In 1985, I married the former Cynthia Blodgett. She had spent most of her life in Encinitas too, growing up in a house on Hygeia where her father, Wally Blodgett, built a glassblowing factory in the back yard. Cynthia is currently the Nurse Manager for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. We have had the joy of raising three children: James 24, Brian 22, and Stephanie 20, all of whom graduated from San Dieguito Academy.

Education and Profession

I graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1977 and then attended Palomar College, studying printing and continued my education in the graphic arts at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. I also played football at both San Dieguito and Palomar. I left school in 1981 to pursue a career in photography but later returned to Palomar and was awarded an Associate in Arts degree in 1999.

I am employed as an Account Executive for Cenveo, an international printing company.
