Mark Sumpter was born in Centerville, Iowa, in 1947, and moved to Rosemead, California, during his junior year in high school in 1964. After high school graduation he attended Pasadena Nazarene College (Point Loma University) on an athletic scholarship. At the completion of his sophomore year he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving from 1967 to 1971, stationed three years at George Air Force Base. While in the Air Force, Mark completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science. Mark began his teaching career in 1972 in the Apple Valley School District. He worked in the Apple Valley school district for 22 years as an elementary and junior high teacher and as a school principal. During his time in Apple Valley, Mark was known for his dedication, and his warmth and commitment to providing the best possible educational experience and environment for his students. In 1993, Mark was honored to be listed in the publication "Who's, Who of America's Teachers", a recognition for being the most influential teacher in a student's education through the 12th grade. In 1994, Mark became the principal of the Helendale Elementary School in the Helendale School District. After 5 years as principal, he became the superintendent and served in that capacity for 7 years until he retired in 2006. Not wishing to completely remove himself from the eduational community, he ran for and was elected to the San Bernardino County Board of Education in 2006 and is currently serving as president of the board. His wide range of professional experiences and training has afforded him the ability to be an effective board member, supporting the County Superintendent of Schools and staff in their roles and responsibilities. Mark has four children. His oldest daughter has her Masters Degree in Social Work and is a Child and Family Social Worker for Long Beach Memorial Hospital. His other daughter has her Masters Degree in School Administration and is a 10 year veteran teacher in the Etiwanda School District. His oldest son is completing his senior year at California State University, Fullerton, and his youngest son is in the United States Air Force, having served a tour of duty in Iraq and a tour in Qatar. Having lived in the high desert for 43 years, Mark has dedicated his professional and personal life to serving the children and families of the area. He has served as a little league coach, park and recreation basketball coach, Sunday school teacher, church deacon, teacher, principal, superintendent and county school board member. |
