A New Beginning for MoragaBy Dennis WankenCandidate for Council Member; Town of Moraga | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
My wife and I moved to Moraga in 1991 to raise our family. We quickly found that much was expected to be a good citizen in our community. Civic involvement and volunteerism was your right and duty for the betterment of all. It was an exciting time to live in Moraga. However, as time moved on, civic involvement and volunteerism was politely discouraged unless it furthered a particular political goal or personal agenda. The climate for involving one self, without reservation or qualification, is disappearing. Public policy is now reserved for those who support the status quo and for the more "involved" members of the Moraga community. I have seen public policy issues debated and decided more and more in close or executive session. Public comments in critical discussions is treated more like a formality rather the key component in making democracy work by our local elected representatives. As a former Moraga School District trustee, I saw the necessity of involving all public stakeholders in the policy decisions affecting public education issues. Whenever I saw a capacity audience at school board meetings, I was so thrilled to see our democracy in action. Sometimes our meetings would become vocal at times, but this passion is what makes democracy a trusted form of government. We must never lose sight that democracy is a living, dynamic, evolving entity. It needs involvement to live and be responsive to all citizens. If elected, I make this solemn pledge to you. I will do everything I possibly can to involve and consider you hopes and dreams in all public policy decisions. Inclusion and transparency will be my personal goals to you and your family. You are needed to help me work for you and for Moraga. Your vote and support will make this possible for a new Moraga. |
