North Richmond ShorelineBy Rhonda F. HarrisCandidate for Council Member; City of Richmond | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Development of the North Richmond Shoreline has become a controversial issue over the years. I believe economic development and environmental stewardship can co-exist.Most residents would like to see our City leaders come together to reach workable decisions that include environmental stewardship and economic development. The City should consider mixed development at the Richmond Shoreline while ensuring environmental preservation and protection of shoreline, wetlands, and open space. I believe we can practice environmental stewardship and responsible economic development. I think the North Richmond Shoreline presents a unique opportunity for Richmond to move forward into a future where environmental preservation and economic development co-exist. There are hundreds of acres in this area. Some of the land should be considered for development and some of the land should be preserved as open space, a natural habitat for migrating birds, wetlands, bike and walk paths and recreational areas. I do not agree with proposals to rezone privately owned parcels as a tactic to deter development. We should be encouraging development that creates jobs and local business opportunities during the planning, redevelopment and construction phase, as well as sustainable jobs for Richmond residents during the operation of new facilities. I too want to preserve the natural wonders of this area; preserve the open space for the future, however, I also want to ensure that all Richmond residents have jobs and the economic resources to go to the shore where they can relax and enjoy it. We should encourage moderate mixed development at the North Shoreline. We should favor projects that create jobs for Richmond residents during construction and long term employment opportunities for Richmond residents in the future. As a City Council person, that is one of the standards I will use in considering development projects on the North Richmond Shoreline as well as other proposals throughout the City. As a City Council person, I will be seeking development opportunities that enable expansion of existing small businesses and encourage the re-location of new industries providing long term jobs for Richmond residents. I will vote for projects based on what is best for our City. |
