Nutrition Matters

More and more alarms are going off telling us our nation's health is in serious decline. Our youth are less active and 30% are overweight. It has been shown that poor nutrition hampers the learning process.

What role can public education play in solving this disturbing trend. Working nutrition into our curriculum from Kindergarten through high school is critical. Putting the after school classroom garden program into the regular school day as a teaching tool, and incorporating the message of eating healthy whole foods into the lunch experience, are good places to start. Offering fewer processed foods and more prepared entrees in our school cafeterias, will provide encouragement to students to change eating habits.

When secondary students head off campus for lunch and the most frequently purchased "lunch" is a soda and a bag of chips we have failed them. Let's work to change the decisions made by students when the decision becomes theirs to make.
