Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg is running for his second term representing California's 6th Senate District. The district includes California's capital city of Sacramento and potions of Elk Grove, Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova.

In the Legislature

Steinberg maintains a reputation for high integrity and effective consensus building. Under his leadership the Senate has forged difficult compromise on some of the state's pressing issues + including the budget, water education and corrections. For 2010 Steinberg has called upon the Democratic Caucus to produce "Agenda 2010", a plan for 140,000 jobs. The comprehensive package of 27 bills work towards producing jobs and providing relief for California's struggling families without raising taxes or abolishing the state's highly valued environmental standards.

In 2008 Steinberg's SB 375 gained national recognition as the first bill to link land use decisions in transportation and housing to greenhouse gas reduction goals. Experts expect the bill will become a model for legislation at the federal level and for other states.

During his tenure in the State Assembly, Steinberg passed the first significant expansion of California's community mental health programs in more than a decade, expanded after school programs and cracked down on illegal firearm trafficking.

In addition, Steinberg co-authored Proposition 63, the mental health initiative approved by more than 5.6 million California voters in 2004. Proposition 63 generates more than $1 billion per year in state and federal funds for the state's mental health programs.

Personal

Born in San Francisco on October 15, 1959, Steinberg received a degree in Economics from UCLA and a Juris Doctorate at the UC Davis School of Law.

Prior to state public service Steinberg worked for ten years at the California State Employees Association as an employee rights attorney, and as an Administrative Law Judge and mediator.

Steinberg and his wife Julie have two children + a daughter Jordana, and a son Ari.
