  • Earned an undergraduate degree from San Diego State University and a master's degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Worked 20 years in architecture, spending several years as Managing Partner of a San Diego-based firm.
  • Former chairman of the San Diego Planning Commission & served two terms on the San Diego City Council.
  • Elected to the County Board of Supervisors in 1995, where his leadership has helped turn around a government on the verge of bankruptcy.
