END THE CHAOS AND CONTROVERSY IN THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENTBy Scott MillerCandidate for Sheriff/Coroner; County of Monterey | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
The ability of the Sheriff's Department to effectively provide public safety has been terribly damaged by in-fighting, bickering and unprofessional conduct at the management level. If you've watched the news over the past ten months you've heard about tremendous unrest and upheaval in the top ranks of Sheriff's Department management. Various individuals have engaged in bitter public displays filled with incriminations, anger and allegations. This has exacerbated an already tenuous morale problem within the Department. While we should have been putting all our policing efforts into fighting gang violence and other crimes, deputies and professional staff have chosen sides in this crisis of leadership. Wounds are being inflicted that will take years to heal, if significant changes don't happen soon. I'd like to restore sanity and order back to the Office of the Sheriff. I have twenty-seven years of law enforcement experience, including six years as Pacific Grove's Chief of Police. I worked for the Salinas Police Department for seventeen years, spending eight years at the executive level as a Captain/Division Commander. I have a reputation of treating everyone with whom I interact with fairness, respect and dignity. We need to "raise the bar" and improve professionalism at the Sheriff's Department on many levels: response to community complaints, quality of criminal investigations, and the way we interact with each other. The crime problems facing our community are too important to leave half-done because of internal disputes and bickering. Let's turn over a new page in the history book at the Sheriff's Department with an improved perspective from an experienced, qualified Sheriff. |
