The Federal Government's Primary Role is to Protect UsProtecting Americans at home and abroad is the primary responsibility of the federal government, as without safety none of the other functions of society or government matter. Never has this challenge been more difficult. We face a number of determined enemies that require our full attention. Congress has a role to play, and as a member of Congress I would:
(1) Re-focus the Obama Administration and Congress on the dangerous threats we face from states like Iran, Islamic radicalism, and terrorist organizations. We must recognize that this is not a criminal investigation. We are at war. Our enemies understand this and we must start to act like it too.
(2) Promote more proactive steps to stop terrorism before it happens. To do so, we must re-build our intelligence organizations + both civilian and military + and provide them with the support they need. This includes building up our human intelligence capabilities, bringing on more analysts that speak the languages of the Middle East, and processing and sharing information from intelligence sources more quickly and efficiently.
(3) Support our troops in every theater in which they are engaged. Our military is the best in the world and will win the fight if we give them tools they need to do so. As we learned in Vietnam, military decisions should be made by commanders on the ground and not by politicians in Washington.
These are the first steps to addressing a responsibility our federal government must take much more seriously. |
