The state of our beaches and Promenade is a disgrace and waste of our civic assets. I have been told that the reason the beaches surrounding the pier and Pierpont are not groomed is because they have been somehow designated as "natural". I vow to pursue de-designation of these beaches and to work with the State to create a plan for development of beachside business. Ventura is a tourist beach community and we've allowed our greatest asset to deteriorate. I envision a European style of beachside business that would include beachside shops and cafes appealing to families. The pier is greatly underutilized as well. Unless contractually prohibited, expansion of concessions on the pier should also be considered. The concessionaire fees, sales tax, and parking fees would be a welcome addition to the City coffers and would expand local business opportunities and employment. Our Pierpont area has been ignored at great cost to both the homeowners and the City. I will propose a council special committee investigation of the homeowner's concerns and act on the recommendations to address them.
