End the fiscal mismanagement that occurred while the incumbents were in office. Continue the seven period day. Re-examine the facilities use fees.Fiscal Mismanagement & The Cost of Education The 2006 Grand Jury charged the SMUHD Board of Trustees with "fiscal irresponsibility" and "squandering" tax dollars that should have gone to the classrooms to pay teachers and maintain our classrooms. I will commit to fighting for sound budgeting and spending practices. Good schools enhance property values while bad schools drive home values down. Students that attend good schools tend to stay in school longer and do better. Money spent on education is money well spent. I want to make sure that our students receive a solid education that will prepare them for college or careers and the competitive global economy they will be working in. In these hard times we need to plan and budget carefully. I assure you that I will budget and spend every one of your tax dollars judiciously to maintain and improve the quality of our schools. Facilities Use Fees The current board mishandled the imposition of facilities use fees. While I agree the District needs to recover their costs, at the same time, these facilities serve a community function. The new policy has forced users to go elsewhere and has alienated the surrounding cities. I believe these issues should be re-examined. This time I would properly include all interested parties in the process and would strive to achieve a policy that takes into consideration these concerns. Seven Period Day I am in favor of the seven period day. I would like to see vocational arts as an option for students. Safety We want to send our children to schools where we know they are safe. We need to ensure that safe buildings, monitoring and security are in place at each campus and that they remain free of drugs and weapons. |
