A Time for Leadership

By Nohema Fernandez

Candidate for Board Member; Sequoia Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Voters rightfully wonder what motivates a candidate to serve. My motivations are addressed here.
Throughout my 42 year career as an educator, I've been fully committed to excellence in education. As the mother of a Woodside High School graduate, my interest in the success of the Sequoia Union High School District is personal. Providing a high quality education to every child, regardless of economic of social background, must remain our highest priority.

A well-rounded education not only teaches young people how to make a living, but how to make a life. I believe that all students in our schools must have access to abundant educational experiences that will fuel their intellectual curiosity and help them acquire lifelong learning skills. Upon graduation, they should emerge from high school prepared with all the tools to successfully enter either the workforce or the college of their choice. That is a big part of the American dream.

The Sequoia Union High School District must maintain its commitment to the highest educational standards. To do so, I will advocate for enhancements in the curriculum including innovative programs that prepare students to succeed in a global economy. We know that the strongest preparation for success comes from pairing solid academic achievements in core subjects with an array of opportunities in sports, the arts, and a rich menu of career technical education offerings.

My own educational background includes a doctorate in music from Stanford University. I have enjoyed a 42-year career as an educator, including serving as Dean of the school of Fine Arts at UC Irvine. A great supporter of community collaboration, I have also served on the boards of several non-profit organizations. Through all my professional and volunteer experiences, I have developed strong leadership skills, have learned to effectively oversee budgets and have demonstrated creativity in finding solutions when challenges present themselves.

With your support on election day, I look forward to serving as an advocate for both students and the school district, and pledge to work in partnership with the community to address the challenges presented by the State's reductions in budgets for education.
