I'm proud of the role I've been able to play thus far in improving the District's operation. I believe I've been able to provide a fresh perspective to the Board, having been instrumental in the selection of new leadership that has significantly improved the overall outlook for our District. Since my appointment to the Board in April 2008, I have been working hard to bring about needed change. I want to make sure that our fine staff of professional fire fighters and EMT's are effectively mentored to ensure effective succession planning for the future. In fact, a police department is not all that dissimilar to a fire district. Having worked in law enforcement for more than 30 years, 26 as Carmel's first Detective, I am able to understand the inner workings of the District; to look at the operation from ground level if you will. Our new Fire Chief, Michael Urquides, has a deservedly impressive record of leadership in the fire service. His administrative team is among the best in the State. Since their arrival in February 2009, they have implemented many needed changes and dramatically improving the dire financial situation we had been facing. Although we are by no means out of the woods financially, the improvements Mike and his team have brought to the operation have significantly increased morale and brightened what had been an extremely serious situation. I want to be able to continue working with Chief Urquides to overcome the financial difficulties faced by the District, and ensure that the high level of service our staff provides the community, both in fire protection and emergency medical response, continues to improve well beyond what is already the best available on the Peninsula. Having lived in Carmel Valley for 21 years and on the Peninsula for over 40, I am familiar with issues affecting our Fire District. If re-elected, I will continue to offer professional, innovative and experienced oversight. |
