A Salinas resident for 40 years, Gary has been involved in civic affairs since arriving in Salinas. Gary has also worked in the fields, the sheds and the canneries of the Salinas Valley. His experience has kept him in touch with working families. As an Alisal School Board trustee, Gary knows what challenges parents face and the dreams they have for their children. Learning English is the key to realizing their dreams. That means being proficient in English, being able to read, write, and speak well in English.

Alisal has been the fastest growing school district in Monterey County. The City of Salinas has adopted a General Plan which has identified the lands north and east of Salinas as the "growth area" for future residential development. Alisal has absorbed that growth by building five new elementary schools and successfully passing three general obligation bonds to fund new school facility construction. Gary has been actively involved in helping pass these bonds and meeting the needs of these new neighborhoods/new communities.
